    When was the last time you thought about how you influence others - how you change minds, shape opinions, move others to act? The ability to influence is one of the essential skills for leaders at all levels.

    This course will give you the opportunity to enhance your ability to influence and engage with others more effectively in order to achieve your desired outcomes.

    This course has 2 levels available, with one aimed at all staff and managers and the other at strategic leaders. See 'which level do I need', for more information. 

    • All Staff and Managers

      Completing all the elements of this learning will enable you to effectively influence and engage with staff and stakeholders.

      Learning outcomes


      By the end of this course, you will be able to:

      • Describe how to effectively engage with and influence others to achieve positive outcomes
      • Demonstrate using a range of techniques to influence and engage with others

      Before attending the course

      In order for you to participate in this session, before you attend you need to:

      • read ‘The Influencing Skills of Barack Obama' an article by Larry Reynolds (Training Journal, May 2009)
      • think of a challenging relationship where you need to establish a better connection to engage and influence an individual (this can be work or personal) - be prepared to discuss the specific details of this relationship
      • consider how the learning outcomes relate to your role and discuss this with your manager to help plan how you will apply your learning.

      • Strategic leaders (managers working at a strategic level)

        Completing all the elements of this learning will enable you to effectively influence and engage with staff, stakeholders and partners in order to achieve organisational outcomes.

        Learning outcomes

        By the end of the course you will be able to:

        • Analyse different styles of influencing and engaging and the potential impact these may have on achieving organisational outcomes
        • Adjust your own  style to help engage more effectively with others
        • Apply a range of effective influencing tools and techniques to enhance engagement with staff, stakeholders and partners in order to achieve outcomes and continually improve services together

        Before attending the course

        In order for you to participate in this session, you need to complete the following before you attend:

        • read ‘The Influencing Skills of Barack Obama' an article by Larry Reynolds (Training Journal, May 2009)
        • consider a personal 'workplace challenge’ that relates to how you engage and influence others - be prepared to discuss this
        • review the learning outcomes (above) and discuss these with your line manager. Consider how you will apply this learning to your role and how you will know you have achieved your aims. This will help you to get what you need from the module and plan how to apply your learning.
